October medal with ribbon bar
Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 1. Oktober 1938
(Commemorative Medal for the 1st of October 1938 – Sudetenland Medal)
Description:
This medal was awarded to commemorate the peaceful occupation of the Sudetenland (Czechoslovak border regions) by Nazi Germany following the Munich Agreement in October 1938.
Obverse: Similar design to the Anschluss Medal — two men, one holding the Nazi flag helping the other step up, symbolizing Sudeten Germans being brought into the Reich.
Reverse: Inscription "1. Oktober 1938" surrounded by oak leaves.
Ribbon: Three vertical stripes: black (left), red (center), and white (right) — a combination of the German and Sudetenland colors.
Material: bronze-washed zinc.
Variants:
With Prague Castle Bar (Spange Prager Burg): Awarded to German personnel who participated in the occupation of Bohemia and Moravia in March 1939. A rare and valuable variant with a silver bar and image of Prague Castle on the ribbon.
Award Criteria:
Military personnel, SS members, civil servants, and civilians who participated in or contributed to the annexation of the Sudetenland were eligible.
Collector's Note:
The Sudetenland Medal is part of the "Flower War" series of German expansionist commemoratives and is considered a political award. It is often paired with the 13 March 1938 Anschluss Medal and sometimes the Memel Medal (22 March 1939).
